Discreet’s gmax is a free 3D modeling and animation tool based on their award-winning 3ds max®. gmax allows gamers to create their own in-game content for gmax enabled games. gmax allows users to produce everything from characters and vehicles to landscapes and props. Not only do you get to customize your games with gmax, you also learn 3D design within a professional-level tool. www.turbosquid.com/gmax

GMAX vs. 3DS MAXLike many "free tool versions" of the professional counterparts, GMAX works like 3DS Max save for a few areas: - .gmax format instead of .max
- no rendering feature
- different hotkeys(WER - not used for gizmo)
- less support of file formats
Fortunately, if you still want to use it(I know I will), there is a website that hosts a number of homebrew solutions for it: www.davidhsmith.net/gmaxindex.htmAnd in the "essential tools sections" there are convertors to change .gmax to .max(& vice versa), plugin to allow rendering among others. All in all, I'd say that since we were taught to use 3DS Max and if you don't wish to learn Blender, this is the software for you! Unless of course someone wants to donate an actual copy of 3DS Max?
