Never one to look past an opportunity to make some cash money, British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has announced plans to establish a download service for PC games, which he reckons will do for PC gaming what iTunes has done for music. Apparantly the service, called A World Of My Own (AWOMO...going to need a better name, Sir Richard) will offer download speeds "enabling play within minutes instead of hours, far greater security, and improved ease of use for the customer". They don't actually say how this is going to be achieved, or even what kind of games are going to be offered, but from the tone of the press release it sounds like they're aiming for full, commercial releases ala Steam or GameTap. Branson says of the service: This is a really exciting development for us, as it gives us the opportunity to do for PC games what iTunes has done for music.
[This] technology will revolutionise how the mass market will play games, and will give them more choice for less money. Sounds...promising. And vague.
