JACK THOMPSON FINDS HIMSELF A POWERFUL, IF UNEXPECTED, ALLYFrom the sounds of it, Jack Thompson has found support in the most unlikely of places: the Vatican. In his annual speech delivered from the Vatican on January 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI denounced violent and sexually explicit video games saying that video games “which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behaviour or the trivialization of human sexuality [are] a perversion, all the more repulsive when these programmes are directed at children and adolescents”. The theme of the papal speech this year - Children and the Media: A Challenge for Education - focussed on the need for the media to be “committed to effective formation and ethical standards”.
