Japanese customs and copyright law is being amended to start banning the exportation of pirated software as of July 1, 2007. The current laws bans importation, but not exportation, of pirated software. This is actually not very unusual. For example, the Canadian Copyright Act doesn’t specifically prohibit exportation of pirated software, although it does prohibit the distribution of pirated works “to such an extent as to prejudicially affect the owner of the copyright” in those works.
