I’m making decent money (some hundreds of dollars each month) from affiliates, and my newest portal system will expand my income even more. The best part being of course, that the money is (almost) completely passive. I don’t have to work extra for the money, I’m leveraging my existing resources to generate income. Naturally I need to promote my business, but I’m doing that for the sake of the games I’m developing.
Now, here’s 3 tip on how to make money with affiliate programs:
#1 - Don’t put directory of products where you sell everything to everyone
Focus on niche. Select your customers. I selected ‘people who play quality online multiplayer games’ for celtichill.com (and actually for my company as well) and I’m using that as a guideline whether I pick new games or not. Sell something for someone. That’s very important.
#2 - Don’t recommend products you wouldn’t use
I’m recommending several products such as PromoSoft and Text Link Ads for the reason that I know they are good products and/or that I’ve tried the products benefited from them. I wouldn’t recommend a product that is not good. I want value for my readers - what’s the point to recommend products that you wouldn’t use?
#3 - Don’t sell for commission, sell to serve
This is the most important rule. Don’t calculate how much money you can make. Focus on giving value for others. If there are problems with the products, be absolutely honest to tell about them. If you have really benefited from the products - be sure to mention them. Focus on how to maximize the value (without forgetting yourself) for the developers. Make sure the product owners will benefit. Make sure the users will benefit. After that, the money will come to you naturally. Don’t think too much about how big commission you ought to get, be more interested on making good deals for everybody.
I’m using these 3 rules, and they work extremely well for me. I consider affiliate money to be almost passive income. It’s something I don’t need to work too much, but it can wield nice long term income. If you are doing it badly, or not using affiliates at all - it’s money left on the table so to speak.
