Around one in ten development people are female, and a wander around the halls of GDC is conformation that this is still an overwhelmingly male business. But things are changing. At the Women in Games GDC session yesterday Sheri Graner Ray, executive chair of Women in Games International, spoke about the growing female influence on games development, publishing and purchasing. She predicted that within 25 years, up to 40% of game development staff will be female, and that games targeted at the female audience will be entirely accepted part of the business. Presently, 70% of online casual gamers are female, and she said this would probably flatten out as non-traditional male gamers discovered casual gaming. She said that 30% of all gamers are female, and this figure is rising all the time. She said, “Educational programs are starting top reach out to female students and that will lead to a bigger intake of women into the industry. We will also see women in more senor executive positions than presently.” She added, “New interfaces like Wii are making games more accessible to women, and interest in playing games leads to interest in making games.” www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4903&Itemid=2
