A new interview with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and designer Ken'ichiro Ashida reveals one of the Wii’s prime targets: Moms.Miyamoto said in an interview with BusinessWeek that moms were taken into consideration when deciding everything from the price point to actual design aspects of the console. “Our goal was to come up with a machine that moms would want—easy to use, quick to start up, not a huge energy drain, and quiet while it was running.” He described moms as being the key to capturing an important part of Nintendo’s desired audience in the next generation. “It was 2003. We got game designers and engineers together to discuss the future of video games. We talked about what specs and features a console should have. But we knew we would get nowhere if we didn't get moms' approval. So we thought about what might convince moms to buy this for their kids.” Miyamoto said that the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console even fell in line with pleasing the motherly crowd. When Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that the Wii should be able to play every Nintendo game ever made, Miyamoto concurred that “Moms would hate it if they had to have several consoles lying around.” And moms love wireless controllers too, according to Ashida. “We didn't want wires all over the place, which might anger moms because of the mess.” www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4219&Itemid=2
