Two industry vets—one a former exec from EA, the other from New World Computing—have launched an ambitious new broadband-focused game company.
Dr. Lars Buttler, former VP of Global Online at EA, and Jon Van Caneghem, founder and former president of New World Computing and creator of the Might and Magic and Heroes series, formally launched the game publisher-developer Trion World Network today.
Calling Redwood City, California-based Trion a game company “for the broadband era,” the firm intends on becoming more than just a minor industry player. Buttler and Caneghem aim to make Trion "a leader in the emerging global multi-billion dollar broadband entertainment market.”
Aside from its Redwood City headquarters, Trion also has a “Technology Center” in Austin, Texas.
Co-founder Buttler will assume the role of CEO, and co-founder Caneghem will serve as president and chief creative officer.
“With ubiquitous broadband, online means leisure; people express themselves in social networks and experience interactive entertainment and games in massively connected worlds,” said Buttler. “We started Trion to leverage all the inherent capabilities of broadband, provide original entertainment, and define the future of media in the global broadband era.”
Caneghem added, “Broadband has created a new frontier in game development, similar to the first explosion of game development in the 1980’s. Designers are free to be creative and explore concepts and designs that were previously impossible or unheard of.”
Trion is funded by venture capital firms Doll Capital Management (DCM) and Trinity Ventures.
