It's about that time. What time you ask? PlayStation Supercomputing Capabilities Hyperbole Time! Remember how much fun we had this generation with the mainstream media clucking about the PS2 being classified as a "supercomputer" and that North Korea was going to import one and launch ICBM's at us via the DualShock? I'm getting misty from the nostalgiac hype. At least this time, the buzz is a bit more positive. According to the BBC, Sony has teamed up with American biologists to aid in the distributed computing project folding@home. There is much fawning over Sony's "cell" processor, indicating that the Sony PS3 farm (some 10,000 machines) could outcompute IBM's BlueGene/L System. Take THAT, previous supercomputing benchmark! What does this mean to you, lowly console enthusiast? You can at the very least fool yourself into thinking that the PLAYSTATION 3 you didn't get your hands on this winter is doing something more important then processing your sorry-@$$ Singstar shrieking.
