In the wake of the execution-style slaying of E3, a peal of protest has gone up from those who really enjoy the temporary sterility, epilepsy and astigmatism that is the result of more than five minutes spent on that infamous showfloor. Over at Penny Arcade it looks like a new era is dawning, as PAX (pictured at right, being hardcore) and E3 were the two big game conferences and now that the king is dead, long live the king. Says Gabe: I personally never thought of E3 as our competitor. The two conventions had very different goals. Now E3, at least as we know it is gone but the focus of PAX has not changed. PAX is about gamers not publishers and geek culture instead of multi-million dollar business deals. We have no desire to turn PAX into a new E3 so don't worry about that. The only place I think we might see a noticeable change is in our exhibition hall. It's already quite a spectacle but I think that the lack of an E3 event means our exhibition hall is going to get f***ing nuts. Hopefully not too nut-f***ing. Although if PAX becomes truly decadent, we can look forward to the tightlipped, impeccably-ponytailed soccer moms that make up 80% of the Bellevue, Washington population being mistaken for booth babes on their reaks at the local Uwajimaya, with hilarious results. www.kotaku.com/gaming/pax/e3-is-dead-long-live-pax-191384.php

PAX: The New E3? www.aeropause.com/archives/pax_5-thumb.jpg[/img[]So, E3 may not be dead, but like a nuclear apocalypse, the E3 as we know it is most definitely gone. But what's this rising from the fallout? Apparently, that would be PAX, the Penny Arcade Expo. According to Gabe: We already knew PAX was the best gaming festival in North America and after today's announcement from the ESA it's also the biggest. With a projected attendece of something like 13 thousand people and exhibitors like Nintendo, Ubisoft, Microsoft and ATI PAX is in position to pick up where E3 left off. Apparently we're not the only ones who noticed either. The site has been pretty wonky and that's because everyone and their mother is talking about what the lack of and E3 convention means for PAX. . . .

And the best part is that PAX is run by a couple guys that really like video games, as opposed to a big corporate non-entity like the ESA. Buck up, little gamers. All is well. www.aeropause.com/archives/2006/08/pax_the_new_e3.php

Penny Arcade is a trusted name in the gaming community, more popular for their webcomic by Jerry Jolkins and Mike Krahulik. They have since then branched out, inevitably it seems, to hosting one of the biggest and most fun-filled gaming conventions today The Penny Arcade Expo or PAX; it's now on its third year. Recent "changes" to the grand daddy of all gaming conventions E3, have lead to widespread rumors that PAX might/could/should be the one carrying on E3's original vision and mission. "PAX has clearly been growing in leaps and bounds. Even before the demise of the 'old' E3, this year's PAX was on track to attract more than 17,000 attendees with a big presence from Microsoft and Nintendo and scores of other big names in gaming. But PAX is all about the community, and Penny Arcade is committed to keeping it that way. We don't want to be E3. PAX is a place that hardcore gamers, whether they work in the industry, or not, come to be completely immersed in game play, game music and game culture."said Robert Khoo, Penny Arcade's Director of Business Development. He also revealed that members of the community can look forward to a bigger and better PAX for 2007. Aside from moving to a venue triple the size of 2006, they have also received reservations for booth booth space from AAA publishers as early as now. They are expecting even more potential new exhibitors and publishers to sign up in the future. Meanwhile, PAX 2006 will be held in Bellevue, Washington from August 25-27. xbox360.qj.net/Penny-Arcade-We-don-t-want-to-be-E3/pg/49/aid/61760
