While obviously not as renowned as the bigger, more productive game developing nations like the US, Japan, Britain and France, Australia has churned out its fair share of quality titles. While most of the acclaimed, noteworthy ones have come in recent years (the last few Total War titles, Transformers, Freedom Force and Destroy All Humans), Australia's development heritage goes back a lot longer, all the way to the early 80's. To celebrate the good old days, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) are running an exhibition from now until next May, commemorating Beam Software's contribution to the nation's development community. Beam (who went on to become Melbourne House) released some of the 80's best Spectrum/C64 titles, including The Hobbit and...Horace Goes Skiing. They also released what is still my favourite fighting game of all time (and has the greatest title of all time): Way of the Exploding Fist. The exhibition is being held at ACMI's "Games Lab" in Melbourne, is open 10-6 daily and, best of all, is free. Go check it out, if only to hear Exploding Fist's @$$-kicking soundtrack. www.acmi.net.au/hits_80s_home.jsp
