According to a new report, New Line Cinema has won the rights to develop a film version of Microsoft and Epic's blockbuster Gears of War from the makers of Collateral and Derailed. Variety is reporting that the film will be written by Stuart Beattie, screenwriter for thrillers Collateral and Derailed. According to IMDB, Beattie is also involved in an adaptation to driving game SpyHunter tentatively set for release in 2009. Marty Bowen, former producer of The Nativity Story, and Wyck Godfrey, producer of a number of films including Alien Vs. Predator and Daddy Day Care will be producing the film through their Temple Hill Entertainment company. Microsoft's last attempt at a cinematic franchise adaptation, with Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films committing to make a film version of Halo, ended late in 2006, with the two companies confirming that production work had been "postponed" following reports of Universal Studios and 20th Century Fox backing out of the big-budget feature. CliffyB Exec Producer of Gears of War FlickWhich basically means they're paying him money so they can slap his name on the thing and bug him occasionally. During Midway's Gamer's Day event in New York earlier this week Epic's Mark Rein told Game Invasion that Cliff Bleszinski is going to be executive producing the New Line version of Gears of War for the big screen. "This is all totally new for me," Rein said. "Jay Wilbur (Epic Game VP) worked with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) who negotiated it for us. We had a meeting with the agents, went through all the possible offers, who was interested and what the terms would be. It was fun. We had a dinner where we went through these term sheets and were like, wow!" When asked if Epic will have someone protecting the 'Gears' franchise while the movie is in production, Rein smiled and said, "Cliff [Bleszinski] is going to executive produce." I once was told I'd be the producer on a made for TV movie, or movie or TV show, I can remember which it was now. It was one of those true crime dealios that was going to be based on one of the stories I had covered at the Rocky Mountain News or The Palm Beach Post. I can't remember the story now just the response I got when asked if I would be paid for helping them with their adaptation: "We'll give you a producer credit." Um, thanks, but no thanks.
